PENICILLIN

Part1. RESEARCH

1)What is penicillin?
It's genetic name is penicillin V. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall while it is growing, weakening the wall and killing the bacteria.

2)How/Where is it made?
penicillin was made by Alexander Fleming in 1928. While he is doing experiment with bacteria, a tear fell on Fleming's petri dish. After some time, he noticed that a substance in his tear, which he named lysozyme, killed the bacteria but not harmed the body's white blood cells. After many other experiments with bacteria, he concluded that the mold he was using for his bacteria experiments was producing an antibiotic and named it penicillin. The name derives from the particular type of mold he was using, called Penicillium.

3)What does this drug do to the body - the effects?
Symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Penicillin will not treat a viral epidemics such as the common cold or flu.

4) What danger exist for users? Side-effects?
Serious side effects:
  • diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
  • fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
  • easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
  • urinating less than usual or not at all;
  • severe skin rash, itching, or peeling;
  • agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior; or
  • seizure (black-out or convulsions).
Less serious side effects:
  • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain;
  • vaginal itching or discharge;
  • headache;
  • swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue; or
  • thrush (white patches or inside your mouth or throat).

5) Other facts or vital statistics
Penicillin can make birth control pills less effective, which may result in pregnancy. Before taking this medicine, tell doctor if someone use birth control pills.
Before using penicillin, tell doctor if you are allergic to any drugs or if you have:
  • asthma;
  • kidney disease
  • a bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • a history of diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics
  • a history of any type of allergy

Part 3. Personal Reflection
1) List three things you learnt about drugs during this project.
= It has side effects, penicillin was made by Alexander Fleming in 1928, weakening the wall and killing the bacteria.
2) List three things you would like to learn about in the future concerning drugs.
=illigal drugs, why are they keep doing drugs, methods of stop drugs
3) List three things you enjoy about using this learning environment (Wiki).
=I don't have to send to my own e-mail, we can see each other's pages, looks neat
4) List three things you dislike about using this learning environment (Wiki).
=My typing is bad so it tooks a lot of time, difficult to drag
5) Do you prefer traditional written essays or creating a Wiki page for assessment?
=Both are ok for me but I prefer Wiki page is better.
6) How do you feel about contributing to other people’s pages
=I don't know what to contribute
7) How do you feel about other people contributing to your page?
=em...thanks to them but are their's informations right??
8) How do you feel about self-assessment?
=It was hard to decide and hard to be honest.
9) Which topic do you feel personally was more beneficial in semester one – drugs or love?
=Love was easier but drugs was more beneficial because we can learn about drugs.
10) If you could choose your own topics for PSE what would you like to study?
=Friend, Religious
